Allison Kirk MSW, LICSW

About Allison

Hi. I’m Allison Kirk. I’m licensed in Minnesota and Texas to provide individual therapy as an LICSW.

I help people who are ready to make some sense of the past, heal and move forward with living a better life. You get to be authentically you and show up for yourself. I am going to support you by being myself. Of course, I’m going to use my professional skills, but this work is so much more doable when we lighten up. Let’s do this.

How I help

I’ve found there are important steps in healing that help people live a life they are happy with. I call it Allison Therapy—dorky, right?! For whatever reason, the letters in my name work to create an acronym that describes how I help my clients improve their lives. And P.S., therapy doesn’t have to be torture. We can have fun, laugh AND heal.

ALLISON Therapy:

A-Anchor In

You will feel supported and heard. I work hard to understand you and the reality of what you’ve faced. Regardless of if it happened decades ago, or this morning, my understanding your reality helps me support you.

You don’t need to carry your burdens alone.

L-Learn How You Got Here

Learn about how a life time of experiences have created the space you are in now. Taking the time to process what and how things happened helps people understand why their reactions were often normal reactions to abnormal circumstances.

Whatever negative thoughts, feelings or behaviors can be changed.

L-Learn about Neurobiology

Understanding your brain, how it formed the way it did, and how difficult experiences affected it, are important steps in helping you feel better. I will help you understand the important parts of your brain while sharing effective tools and skills aimed at providing relief and progress through your journey.

You aren’t your brain, or your thoughts, just like you aren’t your hands or feet. You can take control of your brain.

I-Invest in Yourself

Positive change takes effort. Growth can seem like a challenge. You get to decide which is harder: staying the way you are, or putting in the effort to create what you want. We will work together to help you figure out what you want for you and how to best support you.

Sustainable change starts small, but when you make small changes in a few basic areas, you will create a foundation that results in transformation.

S-See your Progress

Taking stock of what you do well, what you’ve changed, and the good things about yourself is necessary. Some people find this uncomfortable because they’ve spent their lives thinking poorly of themselves. They think its selfish or not cool to think good things about themselves. We’re not talking about developing conceit, we are talking about developing self-loving dialogue and behaviors. Engaging in snarky self-talk, and sabotaging progress happens because we abandon ourselves.. If we can’t see good in ourselves, or at least afford ourselves some grace, relationships will likely be strained, and others will struggle to see your strengths and gifts.

You have lots of greatness about you, EVEN if you’ve made mistakes. Just because your thoughts say something negative, doesn’t mean it’s true.

O-Own What you Can and Let Go of the Rest

Oooof.  This one is hard, right?! We can’t control others, how they live their lives, or their reactions to us. We can, however, control how we react to them. You may have struggled with this, and maybe you’ve been in therapy for years. Even if you think you’ve already tried everything, whole-person healing, and the use of specialized trauma treatments can help expedite moving forward. I’ll support you through the process of trusting a new therapist, trying new things, taking better care of yourself and setting healthy boundaries in your life.

N-Narrate a New Story

The human condition can be hard. If you think about a good story, often there is a chaos or pain building to climax. The main character finally finds their groove after going through a transformation that allows them to see themselves differently. YOU are the main character in your story. Even though it’s been hard, you can create a great next chapter that feels good and allows you to live how you want. This is no joke. For real, for real! Clients can and do heal. They find themselves and get on with their new gig. You can too! Come on…. Let’s do this!
